I want you to picture this: You sit in a comfortable 14-passenger van. Over the sound of soft music you hear your tour guide speak, telling you that you are close to the lake. Out the window to your left you see the first of the Ten Peaks, illuminated by the soft light of blue hour. You’re tired. It’s early. So early the sun hasn’t risen. Yet even so, you feel the excitement building within. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. This is what you’ve been looking forward to since you first booked your trip all those months ago: Sunrise at Moraine Lake.

You climb out of the warmth of the van, feeling the nip of the chilly mountain air but you take a deep breath. It feels refreshing. You follow your guide and make your way up the Rockpile, getting your first glimpse of Moraine Lake at the top. Your breath catches in your throat, the lake is beautiful even in the soft light of the pre-sunrise dawn. You find a good vantage point and you wait. Slowly, the sun starts to creep over the horizon behind you. The light starts high, with the first of the sun’s rays hitting the very top of the Ten Peaks as you look over the stunning blue-green lake. As the sun gets higher in the sky, the light on the mountains - the Alpenglow - gets larger and lower. Creeping it’s way down the massive mountains as you stare on in stunned silence. Somewhere, a loon calls.

Can I drive to Moraine Lake?

An excellent question and a great place for us to begin. The long and short of it: No. You cannot drive to Moraine Lake. There are a few exceptions, like booking a night at the Moraine Lake Lodge (at the low low rate of just $1500/night), but for most visitors the answer is no. This leaves you with three options for getting to the lake: a guided tour, a public shuttle, or some good old-fashioned exercise. Here’s a quick breakdown of these options:

A Guided Tour

This is our specialty. And while we are not at all biased, we do strongly recommend you book with us. We really do strive to make sure you have everything you need to have the best time possible, but more on that later.

Public Shuttles

This is the cheaper option. Shuttles tend to run on a pick-up/drop-off model, meaning you will have to take all your stuff with you when you get off and won’t have the option of returning to the shuttle if you get cold or it starts raining. These can be booked through Parks Canada or through a private company like Moraine Lake Bus Company.

Exercise

While the Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles, it does remain open for anyone keen on getting in a few steps. You are welcome to walk or bike the road, just keep in mind that you are looking at about 12km of hiking one way, the majority of which is uphill.

What’s included in a guided sunrise tour?

Before we begin I would like to reiterate that we are not biased. Just kidding, we totally are, we’re the best and you should definitely book with us. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s discuss what a guided tour is. They can vary a little from company to company, so for convenience sake we will focus on what we specifically offer.

Pick-up, transportation and drop-off

During your adventure with us, you can forget about the hassles of driving. Forget worrying about parking, whether you need to pay or not, and what you’re going to do if you can’t find a spot at that destination you’ve been dying to visit. Leave the worries (and your car) at home and let us be your personal chauffeur for the day. We’ll pick you up from your accommodation, drive you to each destination and stay with you at each stop so you will have access to the van and anything you choose to leave in it.

A guide

This one is a little self-explanatory but the biggest difference between a shuttle and a guided tour is the guide. Your guide will give you information along the drive, show you the best spots to grab pics or have a picnic, and be there to answer all your questions. SNACKS!!!

You read that right, snacks. Delicious snacks too. These are one of the things that will vary the most from company to company but we personally provide instant coffee, hot chocolate and tea throughout your tour as well as water refills. What we are most proud of, though, is our to die for banana bread. If you don’t believe us all you have to do is read some of our reviews raving about how good the banana bread is. Seriously, you’ll be missing out if you don’t try some. The best part is that it’s vegan and nut-free, making it very allergy friendly! If you think you’ll still be hungry during your time with us we have picnic lunch options available as well.

Blankets and Umbrellas

Sunrise at Moraine Lake can be a chilly experience, and mountain weather in general can be fickle and unpredictable. Not to worry  though, with our cozy fleece blankets you’ll be able to stay nice and warm while sitting and taking in all the sights. Rain is also nothing to worry about thanks to our see-through umbrellas. Rain, while it can be inconvenient, has provided some of the most spectacular views we’ve ever seen in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and the fact that our umbrellas are clear means you won’t have to miss a thing.

Peace of Mind

Planning a trip out here can be stressful. There is so much to do and see that it can feel incredibly overwhelming just sorting through the different options. The goal of tour companies like us is to take away as much of your stress as possible, from planning to booking to the day of your adventure. By choosing a guided tour, for at least one day during your trip, you can leave everything up to us. We will take care of everything from the time we pick you up to the time we drop you off. All you have to do is look out the window, take in the views and try to sort through the myriad pictures you will inevitably end up taking.

Guided Tour or Public Shuttle?

If you’ve made it this far hopefully you have seen the benefits to taking a guided tour (specifically ours). As much as I wish I could say the best answer is always going to be one of our guided tours the truth is that everyone has different requirements and needs and for some, a public shuttle will suit them just fine. Guided tours are often structured, meaning you have a set amount of time at each location before moving onto the next. This can be great for those just looking to visit, but for someone looking to spend more time than the tour allots this is where a public shuttle might be the better choice. With many shuttles you have a set arrival time but no set departure time. Meaning once you are up at the lake you would be able stay all day and take the last shuttle out. This can be a mitigated with a guided tour by booking a private tour, as most companies will have a lot of flexibility when it comes to private tours.

Which brings me to the next difference between the two: cost. While not always the case, the majority of the time a shuttle ticket is going to be cheaper than a guided tour. With less benefits (no guide, snacks, amenities etc.) shuttles are able to keep costs low and can be a much more budget friendly way to visit Moraine Lake, especially for solo travellers. With that being said, we do still believe the price difference to be worth it. I mean, can you really put a price on peace of mind?

Final Thoughts

Getting to Moraine Lake can be a confusing and challenging process. Between sorting through all the different options, comparing prices, and weighing the pros and cons of a guided tour vs. a shuttle, it can be an exhausting process before you even get to the lake.
